“Also featured on the gallery’s opening night was a performance by Colombian artist Salomé Cosmique. The act was a window into Puerto Rico’s history of disenfranchisement at the hands of the U.S.
As different moments in the history between the U.S. and Puerto Rico were displayed on a screen to the tune of the Puerto Rican national anthem, Cosmique brought out a Puerto Rican flag and laid it next to a pile of sand and stack of papers.
One-by-one, or sometimes two-by-two, Cosmique displayed to the audience the different historical moments written on each piece of paper — from the transfer of Puerto Rico to the U.S. following the Mexican-American War to the recent protests that ousted then-Governor Ricardo Rosselló — before burying them beneath handfuls of sand atop the Puerto Rican flag.
The performance ended when Cosmique pulled the flag from beneath the pile of sand and papers and laid it on top of the scattered fragments of history, representing a new beginning for the island in the name of the performance: Renacer (Rebirth)”. Nigel Thompson. Al dia News.

An exhibition opening at Little Berlin and organized by Salomé Cosmique and Verónica Ponce de León presents the work of nineteen artists from Latin America and the United States. Their varied responses to a call about self image and the acceptance of ones body as is, is at the center of this beautiful photography exhibition of self portraiture, photographs of the self as a form of protest and rebellion where the subject matter itself forms an axis of resistance and empowerment.
At the center of the work of these talented and bold photographers (male, female, and trans individuals) is the ability to accept their bodies as they are, and in so doing, eschewing societal conventions which seek to regulate and restrict the human body through expectations placed on gender and beauty.
Dissident Bodies seeks to empower both the artist and the audience to accept their bodies as they are.

Salomé Cosmique is a Colombian performer, visual artist and curator who uses her arts as a vehicle to protest political and social issues. She believes that arts can transform, change and heal lives. Since 2012 her work has been focused on topics like immigration, colonialism and women’s inequality. Also, through her performances she wants to recall the memories of our ancestors. She has exhibited in France, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Chile, Colombia, Brasil and Philadelphia.
Verónica Ponce de León
Multidisciplinary artist, theater, dance, quiñol theater, (voiceover) dubbing, mache paper art, educational art, literature, stage direction and performance. She seeks to communicate and sensitize the closest. She loves nature, animals and she loves what she does.

A medida que descubría la historia de Puerto Rico me dí cuenta que aunque los taínos están ausentes y sus rituales olvidados. África vibra en la isla y sus rituales siguen vivos.
Con este trabajo pictórico quiero volver a recordar a las deidades de la comunidad Lucumí (Yoruba) y Bantú (Palo Monte)que llegaron en en el siglo XVI a Puerto Rico desde el Congo y Nigeria. Además quisiera mostrar desde un trabajo colorido inspirado en las telas africanas y en las deidades de estas religiones que los cultos africanos, son parte de la cultura puertorriqueña y que no hay que tenerles miedo
Cada cuadro ha sido inspirado desde la historia oral de un Tata de la religión Palo Mayombe y desde la lectura del libro de la antropóloga cubana Lydia Cabrera “El Monte” y el libro “Creole Religios of the Caribbean” de la escritora Margarite Fernández Olmos.
As I discovered the history of Puerto Rico I realized that although the Taínos are absent and their rituals are forgotten. Africa vibes on the island and its rituals are still alive.
With this pictorial work, I wanted to recall the deities of Lucumí communities (the Yoruba) and Bantú (Palo Monte). These deities arrived in Puerto Rico during the slave trade in the sixteenth century.
Through the creation of colorful cloth, inspired by African fabrics I sought to both honor and make clear that these cultures and religious influences currently exist and are alive and well in Puerto Rico as manifested, in arts, culture, food, and music. Each painting was inspired by the oral history of a Tata (an elder priest) of the Palo Mayombe religion and from my readings of the work of the Cuban anthropologist Lydia Cabrera.
